CAFA Adoption Program Rules

Donors of birds shall be informed that the purpose of the Program is to serve the best interest of the bird(s). Our main responsibility is to provide the best environment for the bird(s).

Placement decisions will be made in the best interest of the birds. Factors to be considered in the placement include whether the bird would benefit most from a breeder or pet placement, an applicant’s situation, and the applicant’s familiarity with the breed.

Birds deemed to benefit most from a breeding situation will be sexed. The cost of such sexing will be passed on to the applicant selected to receive the bird.

CAFA only accepts birds believed to be in good health. When practical and/or necessary, birds will be checked by a vet via external examination. Necessary care will be provided and applicants of such birds will be responsible for associated vet fees, including any associated quarantine costs.

All birds received by CAFA will be quarantined for a minimum of forty-five (45) days.

Applicants for each bird will be supplied with a complete history (as available) of the bird with the exception of the donor’s identity. Likewise, donors will not be notified of the identity of the new owner.

To be eligible to adopt from the CAFA Adoption Program, a member must be in good standing, and have been a member for a minimum of six (6) months. However, the adoption committee, under special circumstances, may occasionally approve outside placement or placement through other clubs or affiliates. Such placements must be approved by a majority of the CAFA Board of Directors.

Applications for birds will be accepted from all eligible members. All applications are to be completed in their entirety. Applicants looking for a breeder bird should note the sex of the bird desired.

Applicant’s bird rooms/ homes may be subject to inspection prior to, and/or after, the bird is placed. Such inspection shall be done at a mutually convenient time and would be done only to insure the bird’s best interests are being met.

A committee of varying CAFA Board members will select, by majority vote, those approved to receive each donated bird. The identity of each applicant will remain anonymous during the Board’s deliberations.

All applicants approved for a bird must complete and sign the Adoption Agreement Form and Adoption Rules Form.

Should the applicant selected to receive a bird have a change in status, or decide for any reason, that they can no longer keep the bird, it is expected that CAFA will be notified and, when possible, take the bird back for re-adoption.

Should the new owner of any adopted bird be found to have abused or neglected the bird, or sold, traded, or otherwise disposed of the bird, or be unwilling to abide by the CAFA Adoption Program Rules, said owner will become ineligible for any future adoptions and, if possible, agrees to return the bird to the Adoption Program.
